Pillion rider dies as bike, trucks collide

TRICHY: A 22-year-old youth was killed and his friend injured after they got trapped between two speeding trucks near Chathiram bus stand here on Monday. The deceased was identified as Ajithkumar of Maada Street in Madurai. His friend Surya, 22, of the same area sustained serious injuries in the accident. Both of them were working in a private company in Thillai Nagar in Trichy and staying in a mansion at Melachinthamani.

Tragedy struck them when Surya picked up Ajithkumar from his office on his bike after his duty and were on their way back to their house. Surya was riding the bike with Ajithkumar was on the pillion seat. As the bike reached the Karur-bypass road end of the bridge, Surya tried to turn right around the traffic island to go to Melachinthamani. However, at this moment, two trucks – one coming from Karurside and another proceeding from Chathiram bus stand — hit the bike before colliding with each other.

The traffic investigation wing north police said that one front tyre of each of the trucks burst as soon as they collided. The driver Gunasekaran, 55, of Karur district of one of the trucks got his leg fractured in the accident while the other driver escaped uninjured. The two motorists and their bike got entangled in the mangled remains of the highly damaged trucks.

On being informed by the local people, a 108 ambulance reached the spot and managed to rescue Surya from the spot and take him to hospital quickly. Ajithkumar could not be rescued then as he got stuck between the two trucks. The fire and rescue service personnel used a hydraulic jack to lift one of the trucks to take Ajithkumar out. A fire service officer said that Ajithkumar was conscious with injury on his legs when he was removed from the spot. Though he was rushed to hospital and provided treatment, he could not be saved. Surya was undergoing treatment while the injured driver was also admitted to the hospital. Police have registered a case and are investigating.
